History of Giethoorn

Giethoorn werd gesticht in de 13e eeuw en kreeg vorm door de turfwinning in de regio. De verschillende meren en kanalen zijn dan ook het resultaat van deze turfwinning.

Founded by monks

Monks settled in the 13th century and found goat horns in the swamp at the time. This led to the name Giethoorn.

Hiding place for geese

During the Eighty Years' War, Giethoorn offered shelter to geese and other refugees.
