What is a whisper boat?

A whisper boat is an open boat with an almost silent electric motor. The boat is light and easy to handle, so you need no boating licence and no experience on the water.

‍

With us, you can hire a whisper boat in Giethoorn for all sorts of group sizes. Our whisper boats seat up to five or eight people, so you are just as welcome with a smaller group. The five-person whisper boat is the more luxurious option. You steer this boat with a steering console rather than a tiller, and it offers a little more comfort with a backrest and cushions. The eight-person whisper boat is steered with a simple tiller and is the most affordable choice.

Which whisper boat suits you?

To help you choose, we have put the options side by side.

Whisper boat or sloop: which one do you pick?

Alongside our whisper boats, you can also hire a sloop with us. You can choose between a luxury electric sloop for eight people and an electric sloop for six.

The main difference between a whisper boat and a sloop is the seating comfort. Based on the price per person, the eight-person whisper boat is the most affordable option, and it is ideal for a shorter trip on the water. Would you rather stay out longer? Then a luxury whisper boat or a sloop is the better choice. These boats have cushions, a steering console  and they sit more steadily on the water.

Stay out on the water as long as you like

Another important consideration is how long you would like to spend on the water, as the duration of your trip determines what you can see along the way.  You set off from Zuiderpad 58, where you can park your car for free. When you leave, we give you a sailing map with several routes to follow:

  • 2 hours: The short route through the village of Giethoorn. You cruise along the main canal, past the famous wooden bridges and thatched farmhouses, and pass the church from 1871 and the windmill from around 1900. This route is ideal if you mainly want to see the village itself.
  • 3 hours: You cruise through the village and, alongside Giethoorn, you also get to see the surrounding waters and countryside. A nice middle ground between village and nature.
  • 4 hours: This route takes you further into the area, past spots such as the swimming island and the De Wiedekiek watchtower. Here you can stop for a moment and enjoy the view.
  • 5 hours: The longest route takes you all the way to Weerribben-Wieden National Park. You cruise through a varied landscape of open water, reed beds and narrow strips of land. This is the best option if you mostly want to enjoy the peace and the nature.

Fancy staying out a little longer? You can extend your route by around 45 minutes. Our tip: if you want to take in both the village and the nature properly, set aside at least half a day. Leaving later in the day? Then go for the shorter village route on purpose, so you can enjoy your trip at a relaxed pace without having to rush.

Read everything you need to know to be well prepared before heading out on the water.

Dogs are welcome on board

Would you like to bring your dog? That is no problem: your four-legged friend is very welcome on board. We simply ask that you do not let your dog sit on the cushions, because of allergies and wear and tear. That way, everyone can enjoy the trip, whether they have two legs or four.

Boating safely with children

Our boats sit steadily on the water and travel at a gentle speed. We ask you to always keep a close eye on children. For young children, we recommend wearing a buoyancy aid.

Buoyancy aids are available from us. On busy summer days, certain sizes may be out on loan for a while. Would you like to be sure of the right size? Then it is wise to bring your own buoyancy aid along.

Reserve your whisper boat in good time

Giethoorn is popular. On sunny days in high season, from April to September, but also at weekends and during school holidays, our whisper boats are often fully booked several days in advance. It would be a shame to travel all the way to Giethoorn and find no whisper boat left when you arrive.

Our advice: book your whisper boat online as soon as you know which day you are coming. That way your boat is ready when you arrive. Outside the season and on quiet weekdays you can sometimes drop by without a reservation, but we can never guarantee availability.
