History of Giethoorn

Giethoorn was founded in the 13th century and was shaped by peat extraction in the region. The various lakes and canals are therefore the result of this peat extraction.

Founded by monks

Monks settled in the 13th century and found goat horns in the swamp at the time. This led to the name Giethoorn.

Hiding place for geese

During the Eighty Years' War, Giethoorn offered shelter to geese and other refugees.
